Vee haf vays of making you score....
Last year both myself and my good lady by way of a fantastic birthday present sampled the delights of football in the Rhineland of Germany in both the top division, Bundesliga, and second tier the Bundesliga 2. Ever since this trip my enthusiasm for the German game has increased ten-fold as this high-scoring, mass supported league gains even more worldwide recognition.
During our three days in Deutscheland we stumbled across one of the most well supported teams in Germany and who have now at Bar and In HQ got a firm interest from the production team they are known as 'Die Fohlen' and more commonly...Borussia Monchengladbach. Sadly our outing to 'gladbach ended in defeat to Europa league qualifiers Mainz and little over six months down the line Borussia find themselves in probably one of the biggest matches in the clubs history this coming wednesday against VFL Bochum in the second leg of the play-offs.
Germany's league system is intriguing in comparison to our's as the team that finish third from bottom in the upper league (in this case Borussia Monchengladbach) play a two-legged tie against the side who finish in third position in the league below thus whoever is victorious retains league status or is relegated at the expense of the opposition being promoted.
Borussia currently hold a 1-0 advantage going into the second leg away at Bochum after what can only be described as an epic night at Borussia Park, after battering on the Bochum door being foiled time and again by the heroic Andreas Luthe and having the added scare of a goal bound header cleared against the bar in the first half, Monchengladbach finally stole the advantage with literally the last kick of the game through Igor De Camargo after a session of pinball in the box the big striker netted what could be one of the most important goals of Borussia's Bundesliga life and sending the stadium into delirium.
Still though, its not job done by any means, Bochum proved to be a more than worthy adversary in the first leg and on home soil things wont be easy for Lucian Favre and his team as Bochum look to overturn the deficit and regain Bundesliga status all is set for a nail biting thriller on Wednesday.
